About Hands on Stanzas
Hands on Stanzas, the educational outreach program of the Poetry Center of Chicago places professional, teaching Poets in residence at Chicago Public Schools across the city. Poets teach the reading, discussion, and writing of poetry to 3 classes over the course of 20 classroom visits, typically from October through April. Students improve their reading, writing, and public speaking skills, and participating teachers report improved motivation and academic confidence. You can contact Cassie Sparkman, Director of the Hands on Stanzas program, by phone: 312.629.1665 or by email: csparkman(at)poetrycenter.org for more information.

Poems about Comparisons
Comparisons in poetry are abundant and so much fun. Children love to say that something is LIKE something else. That is how we often understand things. We compared things inside the classroom to things outside and wrote poems comparing things that are similar in any way they could see.

Poems about Senses
We read Federico Lorca's The Little Mute Boy and talked about how important our 5 senses are. We often take them for granted. I asked the students to write poems about losing one of their senses. Poems about losing their voice, although not one of the 5 senses, were influenced by Lorca's poem and seemed to resonate with the students the most.

Poems about Dreams
Dreams are full of beautiful and interesting images. We read Fantasy by Gwendolyn Bennett and discussed how our dreams often put strange things in our minds while we sleep. The students wrote poems based on dreams they had, or even made up!

I dreamed that
All of my rabbits

They were jumping

All the bunnies
Went to the ground again
Except for one!
