Poems about Senses

We read Federico Lorca's The Little Mute Boy and talked about how important our 5 senses are. We often take them for granted. I asked the students to write poems about losing one of their senses. Poems about losing their voice, although not one of the 5 senses, were influenced by Lorca's poem and seemed to resonate with the students the most.

I lost my voice
It’s sad because
I can’t talk to anyone
They don’t understand
What I am saying

I lost one of my senses
I lost my touch
I went to the beach
It was freezing outside
I did not care
Because I didn’t know
I went ice skating
On the sea

He took away my voice
I was sad because I need it
For talking to my mom
And friends on the telephone
I found it in the park
Swinging on the swings

I wish I was blind
So I won’t do any homework
And I can go to the hospital
And eat lunch
And I can walk into people
And they will apologize
